Residents Approve Boat Parking in Front Driveways After Removing Seasonal Limits

Key Points

  • Allows one trailered boat in a front driveway via special permit
  • Amended to allow year-round parking, removing the April-Nov restriction
  • Passed with the required 2/3 majority despite concerns over neighborhood aesthetics

After a spirited debate, Yarmouth voters approved Article 15, a zoning amendment that allows residents to park one trailered boat in their front driveway via a special permit. The final version of the article was amended on the floor to remove a controversial seasonal restriction that would have limited such parking to the months between April and November.

Planning Board member Ken Smith explained the original intent was to help owners of properties where backyard access is difficult. Resident Andy Baylor moved to strike the seasonal dates, arguing they unfairly restricted commercial fishermen. There's no reason to have a date restriction on this, added Joe Tierney, noting the high cost of off-site winter storage. Opponents, such as Barbara Stein and Christine Marzaliano, expressed concerns that the change would make residential streets look like a marina and lead to future requests for RV or commercial truck parking.

A motion to indefinitely postpone the article failed, and the amended version ultimately secured the necessary two-thirds majority to pass. The new rule applies to residential driveways town-wide.

Motion: To move Article 15 as amended (striking the seasonal date range).

Vote: Passed by 2/3 Majority
